It was Human Rights day on Saturday 21 March, and what better way for young people to commemorate it in these difficult times when they are stuck at home than to enter an online writing challenge launched by FunDza Literacy Trust? FunDza is a nonprofit organisation dedicated to growing a culture of reading for pleasure and writing for meaning among South Africa's youth. FunDza's WhatsApp channel allows visitors to download stories and ready poetry, essays, plays and blogs.
Each day there is something new to read and share with friends. FunDza's Human Rights Writing Challenge is a special initiative providing aspirant young writers with the opportunity to practice and develop their creative writing skills. For the challenge, participants must submit a three-verse poem (following a specific format) that expresses what they see in South Africa, what they hope for, and what they are working towards. participants submit their poem by WhatsApp.
While classrooms and libraries may be closed at present, FunDza's platforms offer quick and easy access to great reading material, and now a fun writing challenge. This is a great opportunity for young people who may be at home to combat boredom and challenge their thinking and creative skills.
Participants have until 31 March 2020 to submit their entry. On 14 April, FunDza will announce 10 winning entries. FunDza will publish the winning entries on its online platform. Winners will also receive R50 airtime vouchers. To take part, WhatsApp ‘hi’ to FunDza on 0600 548676 and then enter ‘0’ to access the Human Rights Writing Challenge.
