NAL'IBALI IGNITES A LOVE OF BOOKS AND STORIES IN CHILDREN

This year marks the release of Nal’ibali Children’s Anthology Storybook, which is a collection of 20 original short stories that are suitable for children from the ages of 0 – 7 years. The anthology features an exciting array of beautifully illustrated South African stories with subjects are aimed at igniting a love of books and stories in children across South Africa. Nal’ibali Literacy Month will be dedicated to giving children access to the Nal’ibali Storybook, igniting a love of books and stories in children.

A celebration of Nal’ibali’s 200th Edition of the Reading Supplement will be showcased throughout all our digital platforms including giving away children’s books and other reading materials.

Nal’ibali continues to promote reading for enjoyment in all official South African home languages and developing reading materials for younger children to boost their appetite for reading. Literacy Month 2023 will promote reading as a key feature for early childhood learning and social development.

Literacy Month 2023 will be celebrated in all Nal’ibali programs nationwide to acknowledge advancements in early childhood literacy, reading materials development and multilingualism.

Celebrations will bring together children at the ECD and Primary school level, families, communities, partners and government stakeholders to join us in promoting reading in South Africa.

Nal’ibali will also be celebrating the 200th Edition of the Reading Supplement that was published for the first time in June 2012. A Reading Supplement is bilingual newspaper supplements that are made available every two weeks, with stories, literacy activities, reading and reading club tips and support - to inspire and guide parents, caregivers, teachers, librarians and reading clubs to make reading and storytelling meaningful, enjoyable and accessible.

The reading supplement was developed to scale access to reading materials on monthly basis, with 10 versions produced and distributed to schools, ECDs, NGOs, reading clubs, Post Offices and community volunteers.

The 200th Edition Literacy Month celebration will be held virtually through our social media channels, website and email communication. We will have story writing competitions, webinars, knowledge sharing moments and some audio and virtual story telling sessions.

To raise awareness about the importance of literacy for early childhood literacy and availability of new reading materials as the ‘two-way process’, through which the ‘literacy learning’ and ‘advancement in different areas of early childhood development is mutually reinforced as integral part of lifelong learning.

We will also look forward at relevant knowledge, experiences, and solutions identified and shared for unleashing the transformative power of literacy at the system, programme, content and practice levels, towards more sustainable reading practices in South Africa. Acknowledgement of partnerships, households and community support fostered for promoting literacy.
