Vacancy: Story Sparker

The Nal'ibali Trust is built on simple logic: that a well-established culture of reading can be a real game-changer for education in South Africa. Literacy skills are a strong predictor of future academic success in all subjects – and children who regularly read and hear engaging stories, in languages they understand are well equipped and motivated to learn to read and write. A significant body of research reinforces the link between reading for pleasure and improved outcomes for children.

The Nal'ibali Trust seeks to appoint a part-time Story Sparker based at the Orlando Children’s Library in Soweto. The Story Sparker will conduct Nal’ibali reading for enjoyment activities in the afternoons.

Responsibilities:

  • To run playful and fun reading clubs for children in the library in the afternoons.

  • Responsible for day-to-day running of the library and ensure that children have access to books and other learning materials.

  • Assist and participate in special events and other related activities.

  • Learn about how to support adults and children with reading for enjoyment.

  • Network with surrounding Early Childhood Development Centre’s and schools.

  • Provide the Nal’ibali national office with all necessary monitoring and evaluation information in the required time frames.

Requirements

  • A desire to become part of a team running a national reading campaign.
  • Interest in children’s welfare, and ability to communicate with them.
  • Interest in learning about how children learn to read and write and how to support this process.
  • Interest about how to grow the love of reading in your community.
  • Ability to read and write well in African languages, and in English.
  • Ability to speak and listen well in one or more African languages.
  • A track record of involvement in community based development initiatives.
  • A track record of honesty, transparency, generosity, and respect for others.

Stipend offered: R2500 per month, this is a six-month contract position.
