Nal’ibali hosts a story event in the Western Cape

One of the ways in which Nal’ibali spreads the love of reading is by hosting literacy events throughout South Africa. Literacy events create opportunities for children to experience Nal'ibali for themselves through listening to stories, playing games based on stories, and learning how to enjoy stories in group settings. The events also show caregivers and volunteers the power of storytelling, and how simple it is to adopt the practice of reading to children.

On 22 March 2023, Nal’ibali’ s Western Cape SEF team joined forces with the Wynberg and Tokai libraries to host a read-aloud and play-based learning session for children from the Dominican School for the Deaf, Precious Angels and Simon van der Stel schools at the Wynberg Civic Centre. More than 50 children participated, while employees from both libraries volunteered by reading stories to the learners, with the assistance of the Nal’ibali Western Cape SEF team.

21-year-old Chavonne White from Mitchells Plain, who recently completed Nal’ibali’ s literacy volunteer training, volunteered to read aloud to the children at the event after hearing about it from Carol Titus, Nal’ibali’s Western Cape provincial coordinator. Although this was her first time reading aloud to many children, she enjoyed the experience. She has offered to read at future Nal’ibali Western Cape events and will also be starting her own reading club to help spread the love of reading amongst the children in her community.

To become a Nal’ibali literacy volunteer, WhatsApp "courses" to 060 044 2254, complete the courses and earn a certificate. The courses will help you improve your storytelling and reading-aloud skills as well as help you start your own reading club.
