NAL’IBALI SA LIBRARY WEEK ACTIVATIONS

Nal’ibali held various activations to create awareness around South African Library Week, celebrated from the 17th to the 24th of March, which was aligned with Nal'ibali's key message of providing literacy-rich environments in communities by ensuring children have access to books, writing materials, and other literacy resources. This initiative was a national activation across all Nal’ibali provinces and special projects.

The City of Cape Town Library Services, in collaboration with Nal'ibali and other literacy organisations, hosted a Libraries March to kick-off South African Library Week 2025. The march aimed to raise awareness about the benefits of using free reading materials available in South African libraries and encourage communities to obtain library cards, aligning with the theme "Libraries for Sustainable Communities," which emphasized libraries' transformative role in fostering community sustainability, resilience, inclusivity, and accessibility.

In the North West Province, collaboration with Tigane Community Library, Assitej, and Klerksdorp Municipal Libraries achieved a demonstration for Early Childhood Development practitioners on the importance of story extensions.

The Gauteng Province commenced the week with activities at Sicelo Library, collaborating with Midvaal Libraries and the Department of Arts and Culture. They also visited Muzomsha Primary School, where they incorporated two notable observations: International Storytelling Day and Library Week. In this event, they partnered with Ekurhuleni Libraries, the Gauteng East District (GDE), and the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture. Nal'ibali also held activities at Muzomba Primary School in KwaThema, Springs, for both Library Week and Storytelling Day, hosted by KwaThema Library.

Nal'ibali collaborated with the Trevor Noah Foundation's special project team to promote the sustainability of libraries in underserved communities during their Human Rights Day event. Fourteen students from Bramfischerville Primary Schools participated in activities at Constitutional Hill in Gauteng, where we collaborated with the National Department of Basic Education and Sir Alba Tutoring and Arts Academy.

In the Eastern Cape, we had activities at Dimbaza Library to strengthen the holiday program as part of the library week activities, featuring engaging storytelling sessions for attending children. Library Week was also incorporated into the Human Rights Day commemoration event at Derrick Ferreira Stadium in Kariega, Eastern Cape Province, marking a significant milestone in the partnership between Nal'ibali and the Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture (DSAC). The event featured the presence of Deputy President Paul Mashatile, who delivered a keynote address. Children had the opportunity to experience books and reading firsthand from the Nal'ibali reading corner, a first of its kind at such events. Nal'ibali's South African Library Week key message of providing literacy-rich environments in communities by ensuring children have access to books, writing materials, and other literacy resources proved to be another successful initiative, where collaborations were central to the success of each event.

The success of South African Library Week 2025 was as a result the collaborative efforts of Nal'ibali and various partners across multiple provinces. By joining forces with organisations such as  Midvaal Libraries, Ekurhuleni Libraries, the Gauteng Department of Education, the Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture, and the Trevor Noah Foundation, Nal'ibali was able to amplify its reach and impact, ensuring that more children had access to literacy-rich environments and engaging storytelling experiences.
