Inspiring a Love for Reading

Nal’ibali (isiXhosa for “here’s the story”) is South Africa’s national reading-for-enjoyment campaign, inspiring children aged 0–12 to love reading stories in all South African languages. By promoting home languages, Nal’ibali helps children build literacy skills and develop a lifelong reading culture. Adults play a key role in nurturing this love of stories and supporting children’s growth.

Our Campaigns

This is where Nal’ibali’s work on the ground comes to life, bringing the love of stories to children all over the country.

  • Meet Molefe Mpesi, a passionate literacy activist and community leader, who will be joining us as a panellist for the Men’s Literacy Imbizo, taking place virtually on Monday, 30 March 2026 at 17:00.

Based in the Free State, Molefe brings 15 years of experience working with NGOs and supporting both rural and urban communities. He has strengthened school programs in the Thabo-Mofutsanyane district and reignited love for mother tongue languages in the Xhariep district.

As a former Nal’ibali Literacy Mentor, Molefe co-authored a guide for parents on supporting children’s literacy during the COVID-19 pandemic and worked with the Free-State Arts Council to ensure indigenous languages thrive in modern education and technology.

Beyond literacy, he is the founder of the “I See a Boy, I See My Son, I See Myself” anti-gang initiative, creating safer, more empowered spaces for young people.

Watch Molefe share his insights in this video and join us at the Men’s Literacy Imbizo to explore the role men can play in promoting literacy and supporting young readers in our communities.
