We believe that by rolling up our sleeves together, real progress can be made to root reading-for-enjoyment practices into the daily lives of children, their caregivers and communities to ensure meaningful and sustainable literacy development in SA.

Collaborating to Grow Young Readers

We work with the following local, regional and corporate partners to connect children, caregivers and reading clubs to multilingual resources, stories and supplements; offer face-to-face mentoring and training workshops; and conduct research into ways we can turn any setting into a conducive one for literacy learning.

The South African Education and Environment Project (SAEP)

The South African Education and Environment Project (SAEP) is a Cape Town-based non-profit organisation that has been serving youth since 1994. It aims to empower people who are neglected by South Africa’s education system through tutoring, skills development, enrichment activities, support and mentorship. It runs seven education programmes at the early childhood, secondary school, post-matric and tertiary levels, including a capacity-building programme for educare centres and a bridging year for matriculants who need a second chance to access and succeed in tertiary education.

Clowns without Borders SA

Clowns Without Borders South Africa (CWBSA) is a humanitarian organisation dedicated to using arts-based interventions to improve the psychosocial well-being of children and families affected by crisis. Since 2004, CWBSA has provided emotional relief to over 210 000 beneficiaries through performances and arts interventions all around the world.

Wordworks

Wordworks was established in 2005 with the aim of strengthening early language and literacy learning among children from historically disadvantaged communities in South Africa. By sharing its materials, know-how and enthusiasm with teachers, parents, volunteer tutors and home visitors, Wordworks seeks to ensure that children can learn to read and write successfully and have fair opportunities to reach their fullest potential.

Jacana Media

Jacana Media has a reputation for publishing books that are entirely southern African in content, idiom, illustration and style. Jacana publishes books on a range of topics and genres, including reference books on South African history, geography and culture; award-winning illustrated children’s fiction; and challenging and current fiction for teenagers.

The Little Hands Trust

The Little Hands Trust helps to motivate and nurture reading and writing among children and their care-givers in Africa. We do this by supporting and promoting the development and use of children’s storybooks in South Africa and, where possible, in other parts of Africa too in African languages as well as English, French and Portuguese and Arabic. In support of Nal’ibali, the Little Hands Trust is co-publishing several books for babies and older children which will be donated through the Nal’ibali network of reading clubs. The FunDza Literacy Trust

The FunDza Literacy Trust is a non-profit trust dedicated to growing educated, engaged and empowered young South Africans. Its programmes aim to boost literacy among teens and young adults by popularising reading, growing communities of readers and developing young writing talent. FunDza works with registered beneficiary organisations to get popular and exciting fiction into the hands of young people and thereby grow a love of reading.

NECT / Tswelopele

The Tswelopele campaign is an initiative established by the Department of Basic Education (DBE) in collaboration with the National Education Collaboration Trust. It aims to support learners in the General Education & Training Band (GET) from Grades R to 9 with supplementary support content that will enable them to catch up on learning losses and enable them to enhance, acquire and develop crucial knowledge, skills, attitudes and values during the academic year.

Department of Basic Education

Department of Basic Education deals with all schools from Grade R to Grade 12, including adult literacy programmes. The aim of the DBE is to develop, maintain and support a South African school education system for the 21st century. For more information, click here.

Harare Library

The Harare Library in Khayelitsha was built through a partnership between the City of Cape Town Library and Information Service, the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the Neighbourhood Development Partnership Grant (NDPG), the German Development Bank, the Violence Prevention through Urban Upgrading (VPUU) and provincial grant funding.

The Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture Provincial Library Services

The Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation renders library and archive services in the province in partnership with municipalities. Through these services, the Department aims to inculcate a culture of reading, critical thinking and lifelong learning in all Gauteng communities. The community libraries focus on programmes that enhance social cohesion and thereby contribute to the communities’ socio-economic development. They provide strong educational support to learners and students in terms of resources, study space and literacy assistance.
