Postmasburg, Northern Cape – 20 June 2025
In a heartwarming display of collaboration and community care, Nal’ibali, in partnership with Educubed Foundation, hosted a successful Blanket Drive at Katinka Early Childhood Development (ECD) centre in Newtown, Postmasburg. This special event marked the official handover of 200 blankets and 360 food parcels to children from the ECD centre and their families, as part of a broader initiative targeting ECDs in the Northern Cape and Limpopo.
The initiative was made possible by the generous support of Boleng Trust, a donor entity established by Assore, a mining holding company committed to uplifting Historically Disadvantaged South Africans (HDSAs). Boleng Trust’s implementing partner, Soul Food, also played a key role in the day, distributing nutritious food parcels that included porridge and flavored rice.
Katinka ECD, the first ECD to be established in Postmasburg back in 1996, served as the proud host of the formal event. The school currently accommodates 177 children and invited 30 parents to witness the ceremony.
What made the day truly special was the active involvement of parents. After the formal opening, the Nal’ibali team led a bilingual story session in Setswana and Afrikaans, giving parents an up-close experience of how reading sessions are managed with their children. They observed how stories were brought to life through songs, engagement, and joyful interaction.
This experience proved to be a valuable introduction to the upcoming caregiver trainings in July, as it gave parents a preview of what early literacy support looks like in action and inspired many to become more involved in their children’s learning journey. This was followed by fun-filled games and face painting, creating a joyful and memorable atmosphere for all.
Peggy Morolong, the dedicated matron of Katinka ECD, expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the stakeholders for choosing her centre for this milestone event. Highlighting the struggles they face, including frequent burglaries and a lack of security. She shared how significant the gesture was.“I am overwhelmed with joy and truly lost for words. “Thank you to everyone who made this day possible,”she said.
To show her appreciation, she led the children in a touching song of praise: “Nal’ibali ra e rata, Ebile re a hloka, Lefatshe kaofela. Nal’ibali,” which translates to “We love Nal’ibali, and we need it all over the world.”
Beyond the heartwarming moments, the event also provided a platform for meaningful conversations among stakeholders. Discussions were held on how to deepen the impact of such partnerships and extend support to more ECDs in under-resourced areas. The blanket drive was more than just a response to the cold winter weather; it was also a strong reminder of what can be accomplished through collaboration, compassion, and community-driven action. As the Nal’ibali–Lesedi Literacy Project continues its journey, this event marks just the beginning of many greater things to come.
