Nal’ibali Marks World Book and Copyright Day with Celebration in Soweto

Nal’ibali commemorated World Book and Copyright Day on 23 April 2026 with a vibrant literacy celebration at Elsie Ngidi Primary School in Chiawelo, Soweto.
The event brought together learners, educators, and key partners to celebrate the power of reading, storytelling, and creativity. Through an engaging programme of performances and interactive activities, the day highlighted the importance of nurturing a culture of reading for enjoyment among children.
Learners participated in storytelling sessions, a lively dramatization of Tselane and Dimo and other folktales, poetry performances, and singing with Nal’ibali’s popular mascot, Neo. The activities created an atmosphere of excitement and joy, while encouraging children to connect with books and stories in meaningful ways.
World Book and Copyright Day is observed globally to recognise the value of books, authors, and reading, while promoting access to knowledge and literacy development. For Nal’ibali, the day served as an opportunity to reinforce the role stories play in helping children learn, imagine, and thrive.
Nal’ibali was joined by valued partners including the Gauteng Department of Education, the Department of Arts and Culture, and Johannesburg Library Region D, all of whom continue to support efforts to advance literacy and reading promotion in communities.
Grade 5 English Teacher Otsile Segale said the day should serve as a reminder that reading is a powerful foundation for every child’s future. She noted that books open young minds, strengthen language and comprehension skills, and help learners grow in confidence both inside and outside the classroom. She further emphasised that World Book and Copyright Day calls on schools, families, and communities to actively create environments where children are encouraged to read regularly and discover the joy of stories.
Nal’ibali continues to work with schools, families, and communities across South Africa to inspire children to read for pleasure and unlock their full potential through stories.
