Inspiring a Love for Reading

Nal’ibali (isiXhosa for “here’s the story”) is South Africa’s national reading-for-enjoyment campaign, inspiring children aged 0–12 to love reading with stories in all South African languages. By promoting home languages, Nal’ibali helps children build literacy skills and develop a lifelong reading culture. Adults play a key role in nurturing this love of stories and supporting children’s growth.

Nal'ibali has developed digital tools to help you read stories with the children in your life. Between 2019 and 2024, Nal'ibali's multilingual website stories were downloaded 1,988,705 times, while our WhatsApp stories received 96,073 downloads, allowing South African children without access to books to enjoy stories in their mother tongue. We need your help to continue developing and sharing stories on our digital platforms.
