Inspiring a Love for Reading

Nal’ibali (isiXhosa for “here’s the story”) is South Africa’s national reading-for-enjoyment campaign, inspiring children aged 0–12 to love reading with stories in all South African languages. By promoting home languages, Nal’ibali helps children build literacy skills and develop a lifelong reading culture. Adults play a key role in nurturing this love of stories and supporting children’s growth.

Our Campaigns

This is where Nal’ibali’s work on the ground comes to life, bringing the love of stories to children all over the country.

Nal'ibali is a reading-for-enjoyment campaign that sparks children's potential through storytelling and reading.
  • Nal’ibali, together with Chris Hani East and Intsika Yethu librarians, kicked off Human Rights Month with a powerful storytelling session at Cofimvaba Library.

The session focused on strengthening the effective use of children’s corners, creating welcoming spaces where young readers can explore, imagine, and grow through stories.

When we invest in spaces for children to read and be heard, we uphold their right to learn, dream, and thrive.

  • Taking Stories to the ❤️ of the Community

At the busy Daveyton Taxi Rank, the Gauteng SEF4 team brought stories directly to families on the move.

By sharing Nal’ibali reading supplements and encouraging parents to read at home, the team helped connect more children to the joy of reading and introduced local programmes.

Thank you to the Daveyton Taxi Association for making this possible.

Together, we are growing a culture of reading.

  • Bishop Rev Fikizolo of St Marks Collegiate Parish blessed a Nal’ibali hanging library and books donated by Dr Zakaza, Dr Dantile, and Dr Shasha during the launch of SA Library Month at the church.

He emphasised: “Bavumeleni abantwana…to access multiple opportunities to read a variety of texts in their mother tongue.”

Mother Nompucuko Jaggers was delighted that the church-based reading corner now adds to the children’s DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) sessions, creating more spaces for young readers to explore stories in their home languages.
