Since its launch in 2022, the Nal’ibali SEF Family Literacy Project has delivered transformative impact across South Africa by improving access to reading resources, strengthening literacy practices within communities, and creating meaningful employment opportunities. Through support from the Social Employment Fund (SEF), the project not only fostered a culture of reading among children and families but also empowered participants with valuable skills and work experience.
The project reached thousands of children through schools, ECD centres, libraries, clinics, reading clubs, and home-based literacy activities. By distributing over 175,000 age-appropriate reading materials in all South African languages, Nal’ibali significantly expanded access to quality literacy resources and encouraged reading for enjoyment and learning.

Its impact extended beyond literacy outcomes. Through targeted library campaigns, thousands of children and families gained access to local library services, while storytelling sessions and reading corners created new opportunities for learning in community spaces. These interventions helped strengthen community engagement and reinforced the importance of reading as a foundation for lifelong learning.
The project also made a meaningful contribution to employment and skills development. Participants gained practical experience in literacy facilitation, leadership, administration, project management, and community mobilisation, enhancing their employability and creating pathways for future opportunities.

The Phase 4 endline evaluation confirmed the project’s positive impact on literacy behaviours, community participation, and participant development. As Nal’ibali enters the next phase of implementation, these achievements provide a strong foundation for expanding reach, deepening impact, and continuing to change lives through literacy.
