Inspiring a Love for Reading

Nal’ibali (isiXhosa for “here’s the story”) is South Africa’s national reading-for-enjoyment campaign, inspiring children aged 0–12 to love reading stories in all South African languages. By promoting home languages, Nal’ibali helps children build literacy skills and develop a lifelong reading culture. Adults play a key role in nurturing this love of stories and supporting children’s growth.

Our Campaigns

This is where Nal’ibali’s work on the ground comes to life, bringing the love of stories to children all over the country.

  • From Ledig To The Provincial Stage!

“We are incredibly proud of their hard work, confidence and love for reading.” — Tebogo Sephoti, our ambassador.

The Ledig Book Club has made us incredibly proud, securing 1st place in all categories in both English and Setswana at the Regional Book Club Competitions!

What makes this achievement even more special is the journey behind it. The Ledig Reading Club was started by Ms Malgase, one of our dedicated Nal’ibali coordinators in the North West, who has played an important role in creating a space where children can discover the joy of reading, develop their confidence and showcase their talents.

Through the commitment of the learners, mentors and everyone supporting the club, that passion for reading continues to grow.

Now, the Ledig Book Club is taking that success to the Provincial Book Club Competitions in Mahikeng from 13–15 September.

Congratulations to the learners, Ms Malgase, the mentors, families and everyone who continues to nurture a love of reading in the community.

From a reading club started with a vision in Ledig to the provincial stage, this is what happens when we give children the opportunity to read, participate and shine.

The journey continues!

Become a Hero for Literacy

Join Nal’ibali as a volunteer and help spark a lifelong love of reading in children. Together, we can build a brighter future—one story at a time.

Call for Indigenous Language Stories

Nal’ibali is calling on writers to submit new, original children’s stories in indigenous African languages!

Stories in indigenous South African languages give more children access to stories in their mother tongue.

(Stories in English and Afrikaans may also be submitted We are not offering prizes for them because we want to encourage writing in indigenous African languages during this campaign. Your contributions are always highly appreciated!)
