Inspiring a Love for Reading

Nal’ibali (isiXhosa for “here’s the story”) is South Africa’s national reading-for-enjoyment campaign, inspiring children aged 0–12 to love reading stories in all South African languages. By promoting home languages, Nal’ibali helps children build literacy skills and develop a lifelong reading culture. Adults play a key role in nurturing this love of stories and supporting children’s growth.

Our Campaigns

This is where Nal’ibali’s work on the ground comes to life, bringing the love of stories to children all over the country.

Nal'ibali is a reading-for-enjoyment campaign that sparks children's potential through storytelling and reading.
  • Our Tlhabane training at the Resource Centre in Rustenburg was more than just a workshop, it was collaboration in action.

Together with I-Rise Generation, a local organisation focused on community empowerment, we brought ECD practitioners and libraries into one shared space to strengthen early literacy support.

The impact? Practitioners gained practical tools, built local connections, and now have ongoing support to create richer reading experiences for children.

Because when communities work together, literacy grows stronger.

  • Reading brings joy.

A happy child is a reading child.

  • Grown-ups love storytime too.

A newspaper supplement, softly tucked inside the pages, can feel like a small gift. A quiet moment to pause, breathe, and get lost in a story.

Just like children do.

Because the joy of reading never grows old.

  • Something special unfolded in that space.

As Ms N. Grobler from Little Seeds Eastern Cape read Uncwadi, the children weren’t just listening, they were drawn in, seeing themselves in the story and beginning to find their own voices.

Then came the shift. With the Nal’ibali supplement book-making session, they moved from turning pages to creating their own. Little hands, big ideas, each child becoming a storyteller, holding something they made with pride.

With Mfundo the Mascot bringing energy and laughter, the room filled with imagination, confidence and pure joy.

This is the magic of reading for enjoyment.
It does not end with a story. It begins there.
