Inspiring a Love for Reading

Nal’ibali (isiXhosa for “here’s the story”) is South Africa’s national reading-for-enjoyment campaign, inspiring children aged 0–12 to love reading stories in all South African languages. By promoting home languages, Nal’ibali helps children build literacy skills and develop a lifelong reading culture. Adults play a key role in nurturing this love of stories and supporting children’s growth.

Our Campaigns

This is where Nal’ibali’s work on the ground comes to life, bringing the love of stories to children all over the country.

  • Hello! Dumela! Hallo! Thobela! Sawubona! Lotjha! Habari! Molo! Xewani!

Parents and caregivers, we want to hear from YOU!

What book are you or your child reading this week? Share a picture and a short description in the comments.

Your recommendation could inspire another family to pick up a book and read together today.

Let’s flood the comments with stories, books, and reading inspiration!
  • From just 3 children to a growing community of young readers!

A year ago, with the support of the Ipeleng Library, the Bakgaaka Reading Club began with a simple vision: to create a space where children could discover the joy of reading.

Today, that vision continues to grow beautifully. More children are walking through our doors, eager to read, learn, share stories, and belong. We have also welcomed inspiring guests and supporters who continue to pour encouragement into this journey.

Winter may affect attendance, but it will never freeze our passion. We remain determined to build a South Africa where reading is not a luxury, but part of everyday life in every child’s world.

One story. One child. One reading club at a time.
  • Today we officially launch the Call for Indigenous South African Language Stories!

We invite storytellers, writers, parents, grandparents, and community members to share original stories that celebrate our languages, cultures, and imagination.

Stories help children read, dream, learn, and see themselves reflected in the books they read.

The story submission page is now live.

Please submit your story here:
nalibali.org/a-call-for-stories

Submit your story and stand a chance to WIN!

Closing date is 31 August 2026.

Become a Hero for Literacy

Join Nal’ibali as a volunteer and help spark a lifelong love of reading in children. Together, we can build a brighter future—one story at a time.

Call for Indigenous Language Stories

Nal’ibali is calling on writers to submit new, original children’s stories in indigenous African languages!

Stories in indigenous South African languages give more children access to stories in their mother tongue.

(Stories in English and Afrikaans may also be submitted We are not offering prizes for them because we want to encourage writing in indigenous African languages during this campaign. Your contributions are always highly appreciated!)
