Inspiring a Love for Reading

Nal’ibali (isiXhosa for “here’s the story”) is South Africa’s national reading-for-enjoyment campaign, inspiring children aged 0–12 to love reading with stories in all South African languages. By promoting home languages, Nal’ibali helps children build literacy skills and develop a lifelong reading culture. Adults play a key role in nurturing this love of stories and supporting children’s growth.

Our Campaigns

This is where Nal’ibali’s work on the ground comes to life, bringing the love of stories to children all over the country.

  • The Nal'ibali-@trevornoahfoundation Literacy Project, in collaboration with Freedom Primary School, Imperial, and Motus Community Trust, hosted a literacy event in preparation for the Literacy Month Spelling Bee competition on 22 September 2025. The event, which took the shape of a DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) session, created an engaging learning environment where learners participated in storytelling, spelling bees, and reading aloud. Learners were given storybooks to help them enjoy engaging stories after the session.

The programme emphasised the value of teamwork in promoting literacy, increasing access to reading resources, and empowering children via storytelling and reading. Nal'ibali prides itself in partnering with organisations in the literacy space, government, and individuals. Find out how you can contribute to growing in South Africa on the Nal'ibali weebsite.
