Inspiring a Love for Reading

Nal’ibali (isiXhosa for “here’s the story”) is South Africa’s national reading-for-enjoyment campaign, inspiring children aged 0–12 to love reading stories in all South African languages. By promoting home languages, Nal’ibali helps children build literacy skills and develop a lifelong reading culture. Adults play a key role in nurturing this love of stories and supporting children’s growth.

Our Campaigns

This is where Nal’ibali’s work on the ground comes to life, bringing the love of stories to children all over the country.

Nal'ibali is a reading-for-enjoyment campaign that sparks children's potential through storytelling and reading.
  • The most powerful way to share stories with Early Childhood Development (ECD) children is to meet them where they are, on their level, where connection and imagination can truly come alive.

At 2winz Educare in Dimbaza Township, Nal’ibali Storytime brought children and practitioners together in a warm, joyful reading experience filled with laughter, interaction, and curiosity.

When adults read with children, not above them, storytelling becomes a shared journey. Children feel included, safe, and inspired, while language, listening, and early literacy skills are strengthened in a natural and meaningful way.

This is how a love of reading begins, through presence, connection, and stories shared together.

Men’s Literacy Imbizo initiatives like this are designed to encourage men to become active reading role models and build a culture of reading in their communities.
  • There was joy, energy and a true love for reading at Elliot Library in eKhowa, Chris Hani East, as the community came together for an early World Book and Copyright Day celebration at Hillview Primary School.

What made the day unforgettable was the heart behind it. Former SEF beneficiaries, who refused to stop when the project ended, are now leading the way. Their passion filled the space as they brought stories to life and inspired young readers.

Together with the library and Sakhisizwe Municipality, they are keeping Nal’ibali reading activities alive and growing. This is what happens when a community believes in the power of stories. It lives on, it grows, and it reaches even more children.

A celebration of books, yes. But even more, a celebration of commitment, growth and community spirit.
