Inspiring a Love for Reading

Nal’ibali (isiXhosa for “here’s the story”) is South Africa’s national reading-for-enjoyment campaign, inspiring children aged 0–12 to love reading stories in all South African languages. By promoting home languages, Nal’ibali helps children build literacy skills and develop a lifelong reading culture. Adults play a key role in nurturing this love of stories and supporting children’s growth.

Our Campaigns

This is where Nal’ibali’s work on the ground comes to life, bringing the love of stories to children all over the country.

Nal'ibali is a reading-for-enjoyment campaign that sparks children's potential through storytelling and reading.
  • From Cape Town, we hear from 11-year-old Cassidy Hendricks, one of our ambassadors, as we celebrate Literacy Month.

Cassidy shares her thoughts on the power of reading and storytelling, and why creating opportunities for children to engage with books in their own languages is so important.

For us, literacy is about more than learning to read. It is about giving children the confidence to express themselves, discover new worlds, connect with their heritage and develop a lifelong love of stories.

Watch the video to hear Cassidy’s message and join us in keeping children reading, sharing stories and growing their love of books.
  • We spent the day with children in Cape Town this Literacy Month, sharing stories, reading together and celebrating the joy of books.

For us, literacy is about more than learning to read. It is about giving children the opportunity to discover new worlds, imagine what is possible and find their own voices through stories.

Every story shared is a step towards building a culture of reading.
  • Our ambassador Limyoli Mabusela is bringing her love for books to life this morning!

A passionate book activist, avid reader and champion of our cause, Limyoli is always ready to share her enthusiasm for reading and inspire others to discover the joy of stories.

Today, she is joined by her mother, Sindy, as they chat about the books Limyoli enjoys, the stories that excite her and what keeps her turning the pages.

It’s reading, conversation and family connection all in one! Let’s keep the love of books growing.
