Inspiring a Love for Reading

Nal’ibali (isiXhosa for “here’s the story”) is South Africa’s national reading-for-enjoyment campaign, inspiring children aged 0–12 to love reading with stories in all South African languages. By promoting home languages, Nal’ibali helps children build literacy skills and develop a lifelong reading culture. Adults play a key role in nurturing this love of stories and supporting children’s growth.

Our Eastern Cape team recently collaborated with Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality( BCMM) Libraries, Law Enforcement, and the Fire Department to make this Mandela Day unforgettable for the children of Berlin, near East London in the Eastern Cape. In addition to the incredible stories shared by our team, parents, and children, the BCMM firefighting department gave children tips on how to prevent and deal with fires, while law enforcement taught them how to stand up to bullying. The event not only offered valuable knowledge but also fostered a sense of community among everyone involved, highlighting the positive impact of this collaborative effort.
