Inspiring a Love for Reading

Nal’ibali (isiXhosa for “here’s the story”) is South Africa’s national reading-for-enjoyment campaign, inspiring children aged 0–12 to love reading stories in all South African languages. By promoting home languages, Nal’ibali helps children build literacy skills and develop a lifelong reading culture. Adults play a key role in nurturing this love of stories and supporting children’s growth.

Our Campaigns

This is where Nal’ibali’s work on the ground comes to life, bringing the love of stories to children all over the country.

Nal'ibali is a reading-for-enjoyment campaign that sparks children's potential through storytelling and reading.
  • As Youth Month comes to a close, we reflect on the courage and vision of the young people of 1976, who stood up for their right to learn in the languages they understood and to shape a more just future.

Honouring their legacy means investing in today’s children and young people. One of the most powerful ways to do this is by making stories part of every child’s life. Stories spark imagination, build language, strengthen relationships, and help children see themselves and the world around them.

The good news is that sharing stories doesn’t have to cost a thing. Read together if you have a book, or tell a family story, share a folktale, sing a song, or simply create time to talk and imagine together. Oral storytelling has always been at the heart of our communities, passing on our languages, cultures, values, and wisdom from one generation to the next.

As we move beyond Youth Month, let’s keep investing in children through the simple, everyday act of sharing stories. Every story shared today helps build confident readers, lifelong learners, and a brighter future for South Africa.
  • IMPORTANT NOTICE

  • Our Mankweng Team had an amazing time partnering with the Bonang Lesedi ECD Forum!

Together, we brought energy, learning, and laughter while raising awareness about child protection and the importance of safe, caring spaces where children can grow, learn, and thrive.

Protecting children and promoting literacy go hand in hand in building a brighter future for all.

Thank you to Bonang Lesedi ECD Forum for this meaningful and joyful partnership!

  • Recently, children from Evaton and Evaton West marched to raise awareness about child protection and speak out against abuse.

Their message was simple and powerful: “No excuse for abuse.”

Together, let’s create safer communities for every child.

Become a Hero for Literacy

Join Nal’ibali as a volunteer and help spark a lifelong love of reading in children. Together, we can build a brighter future—one story at a time.

Call for Indigenous Language Stories

Nal’ibali is calling on writers to submit new, original children’s stories in indigenous African languages!

Stories in indigenous South African languages give more children access to stories in their mother tongue.

(Stories in English and Afrikaans may also be submitted We are not offering prizes for them because we want to encourage writing in indigenous African languages during this campaign. Your contributions are always highly appreciated!)
