Inspiring a Love for Reading

Nal’ibali (isiXhosa for “here’s the story”) is South Africa’s national reading-for-enjoyment campaign, inspiring children aged 0–12 to love reading stories in all South African languages. By promoting home languages, Nal’ibali helps children build literacy skills and develop a lifelong reading culture. Adults play a key role in nurturing this love of stories and supporting children’s growth.

Our Campaigns

This is where Nal’ibali’s work on the ground comes to life, bringing the love of stories to children all over the country.

  • A new crop of African leadership is emerging, rooted in literacy, storytelling, social cohesion and people-centred change.

We are proud to celebrate our Executive Director, @troklorato, on her nomination for the 2026 AMHROA Pan-African Mental Health Leadership & Excellence Award. This recognition shines a light on a new generation of African leaders who are shaping the continent’s future through bold, inclusive and transformative leadership.

Lorato represents a leadership model grounded in impact, empathy and human development. Through her work in the literacy space, she has championed children’s reading, multilingual storytelling and community-led literacy initiatives that expand access to learning, imagination and opportunity for thousands of children and families.

As an accomplished writer, she understands the power of stories to build empathy, strengthen identity and inspire social change. Her leadership also extends into national civic life through her role as a member of the Eminent Persons Group, tasked with guiding and promoting South Africa’s society-wide National Dialogue, helping shape conversations about the country’s future, unity and shared vision.

Her nomination reflects a growing understanding that African leadership is not only defined by titles or institutions, but by leaders who are building more literate, connected, resilient and mentally healthier societies.

The award will be presented during the two-day AMHROA 2026 Continental Summit.

Become a Hero for Literacy

Join Nal’ibali as a volunteer and help spark a lifelong love of reading in children. Together, we can build a brighter future—one story at a time.

Call for Indigenous Language Stories

Nal’ibali is calling on writers to submit new, original children’s stories in indigenous African languages!

Stories in indigenous South African languages give more children access to stories in their mother tongue.

(Stories in English and Afrikaans may also be submitted We are not offering prizes for them because we want to encourage writing in indigenous African languages during this campaign. Your contributions are always highly appreciated!)
