Inspiring a Love for Reading

Nal’ibali (isiXhosa for “here’s the story”) is South Africa’s national reading-for-enjoyment campaign, inspiring children aged 0–12 to love reading with stories in all South African languages. By promoting home languages, Nal’ibali helps children build literacy skills and develop a lifelong reading culture. Adults play a key role in nurturing this love of stories and supporting children’s growth.

Our Campaigns

This is where Nal’ibali’s work on the ground comes to life, bringing the love of stories to children all over the country.

Nal'ibali is a reading-for-enjoyment campaign that sparks children's potential through storytelling and reading.
  • A child who is read to becomes a child who loves to read.

This World Book Day, let’s commit to reading aloud for at least 15 minutes. At home. At school. Under a tree. Anywhere.

Tag someone who reads to children and thank them for building a nation of readers.

  • Since the inception of the Nal’ibali Reading Supplement, over 40 million copies have found their way into the hands of curious young readers across South Africa!

A huge thank you to our amazing partners, the Post Office, Sunday newspapers, and everyone helping us spread the joy of stories!

  • Nal’ibali brings story power to STEM!

Today we joined future innovators at the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Foundation Phase Exhibition at @scibono_discovery_centre in Johannesburg, and what a celebration of curious minds it was!

Because before children can code it, build it or test it… they need to read it.

Through joyful storytelling, home-language reading and imagination, we’re helping lay the literacy foundation that makes science, technology, engineering and maths accessible to every child.

Stories build thinkers.
Readers become innovators.

  • Dear Nal’ibalians,

We are thrilled to share that the @dailymaverickhas featured a beautiful piece on our joyful crusade to save South Africa’s lost generation of readers. The article celebrates the bold, community-driven work of putting books into children’s hands and restoring the joy of reading.

Our Executive Director, @troklorato, was inspired by her mother, who first introduced her to stories. That early spark shaped her lifelong passion for literacy and her vision of a South Africa where every child can encounter books and the joy of reading.

The story also highlights our incredible team of staff, caregivers, teachers, librarians, and ECD practitioners, and our 800 “foot soldiers”, Story Sparkers, Literacy Mentors, and Provincial Coordinators and Administrators, who bring stories and literacy support to children across all nine provinces.

With 1.6 million children outside preschools, this work is more important than ever. Our ED envisions taking this movement beyond South Africa into the SADC region, planting seeds of literacy and fostering a culture of reading across the continent.

A heartfelt thank you to Takudzwa Pongweni and the Daily Maverick for capturing the impact of our work and the communities we serve.
