Inspiring a Love for Reading

Nal’ibali (isiXhosa for “here’s the story”) is South Africa’s national reading-for-enjoyment campaign, inspiring children aged 0–12 to love reading stories in all South African languages. By promoting home languages, Nal’ibali helps children build literacy skills and develop a lifelong reading culture. Adults play a key role in nurturing this love of stories and supporting children’s growth.

Our Campaigns

This is where Nal’ibali’s work on the ground comes to life, bringing the love of stories to children all over the country.

  • We’re taking our Call for Stories to the airwaves!

This Saturday, 22 August at 06:15, our Community Development Coordinator, @madoda.ndlakuse, will join Hlengiwe Mnguni on Ngezeveke Le on @ikwekwezi_fm, a show produced by Mbali Maluma.

They’ll discuss our call for children’s stories in isiNdebele, siSwati, Setswana, Tshivenda and Xitsonga.

The interview is an important opportunity to reach writers and storytellers who may have stories to share in these languages, helping us grow the range of quality, locally relevant stories available to children.

Tune in and share the opportunity with a writer in your network.
  • Tune in to Kasie FM 97.1 this morning at 10:15!

Our Gauteng Provincial Coordinator, Sithembiso Nhlapo, will be on Morning Essentials, hosted by Portia Mathe Motaung, talking about Nal’ibali’s work to grow a culture of reading and how children can get involved in reading clubs.

Don’t miss it. Tune in and join the conversation!
  • A Notice from Nal’ibali.

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Tlotlo Tsheka, one of our bright and promising ambassadors, who passed away after a short illness.

Tlotlo was a gifted young writer and illustrator who began creating stories at an extraordinary age. At just five, she wrote I Remember When, which includes Mommy is Sick and My Arm Hurts, reflecting on caring for her mother and everyday childhood moments.

At six, she wrote Mommy’s Secret, a playful story capturing a special secret shared between a mother and daughter. She went on to self-publish her books, sharing her creativity and imagination with young readers.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends and all who knew and loved her.

Tlotlo’s stories are part of the legacy she leaves behind. May her memory continue to inspire young storytellers.

Rest in peace, Tlotlo.

Become a Hero for Literacy

Join Nal’ibali as a volunteer and help spark a lifelong love of reading in children. Together, we can build a brighter future—one story at a time.

Call for Indigenous Language Stories

Nal’ibali is calling on writers to submit new, original children’s stories in indigenous African languages!

Stories in indigenous South African languages give more children access to stories in their mother tongue.

(Stories in English and Afrikaans may also be submitted We are not offering prizes for them because we want to encourage writing in indigenous African languages during this campaign. Your contributions are always highly appreciated!)
