Inspiring a Love for Reading

Nal’ibali (isiXhosa for “here’s the story”) is South Africa’s national reading-for-enjoyment campaign, inspiring children aged 0–12 to love reading stories in all South African languages. By promoting home languages, Nal’ibali helps children build literacy skills and develop a lifelong reading culture. Adults play a key role in nurturing this love of stories and supporting children’s growth.

Our Campaigns

This is where Nal’ibali’s work on the ground comes to life, bringing the love of stories to children all over the country.

  • The 7th Men’s Literacy Imbizo is for everyone who believes in the power of literacy to change lives.

While the Imbizo focuses on the role men can play in promoting a culture of reading, the conversations are enriched by the participation of women, gender-diverse people, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community, alongside educators, caregivers, literacy practitioners, community leaders, and young people.

Together, we can build more inclusive, literate communities where every child has the opportunity to read, learn, and thrive.

  • It starts with a story: “When I grow up, I want to see myself in a story.”

For many queer and gender-nonconforming children in our communities, finding that reflection can be a lonely search. This Pride Month, Nal’ibali stands firmly in our belief that every child deserves a safe space to see themselves represented.

Stories have the power to heal, to educate, and to save lives. Literature like Tshego Magolego’s Sipho’s Pink Dress acts as both a mirror for youth navigating their identity and a window of empathy for their peers. These aren’t just pages to be read, they are lifelines of validation, kindness, and belonging for little ones growing up in our townships and suburbs.

True literacy does more than teach a child how to read words; it teaches them how to understand the world. By bringing inclusive narratives into our reading clubs and classrooms, we can dismantle bullying and cultivate a culture of radical acceptance from a young age.

Let’s read together, understand each other, and build a more compassionate, united South Africa, one story at a time.

Become a Hero for Literacy

Join Nal’ibali as a volunteer and help spark a lifelong love of reading in children. Together, we can build a brighter future—one story at a time.

Call for Indigenous Language Stories

Nal’ibali is calling on writers to submit new, original children’s stories in indigenous African languages!

Stories in indigenous South African languages give more children access to stories in their mother tongue.

(Stories in English and Afrikaans may also be submitted We are not offering prizes for them because we want to encourage writing in indigenous African languages during this campaign. Your contributions are always highly appreciated!)
