Inspiring a Love for Reading

Nal’ibali (isiXhosa for “here’s the story”) is South Africa’s national reading-for-enjoyment campaign, inspiring children aged 0–12 to love reading stories in all South African languages. By promoting home languages, Nal’ibali helps children build literacy skills and develop a lifelong reading culture. Adults play a key role in nurturing this love of stories and supporting children’s growth.

Our Campaigns

This is where Nal’ibali’s work on the ground comes to life, bringing the love of stories to children all over the country.

  • More than a march. A united call to protect children.

As part of our Child Protection Week awareness march, we handed over a petition to the South African Police Service, calling for stronger action against child abuse, neglect, violence, and exploitation. We are encouraged that the petition was officially received and signed.

Thank you to everyone who marched, signed, and stood with us. Together, we can build communities where every child is safe, seen, heard, and protected.

  • Stories, smiles, and a shared commitment to protecting children 💙

Child Protection Week came alive in Eldorado Park as more than 13 organisations and ECD centres joined hands to champion children’s rights, safety, and well-being.

Nal’ibali was proud to be part of the day, bringing the joy of reading and storytelling to children and families through interactive story sessions and free reading supplements.

From hand painting and creative play to dancing, singing, and storytelling, children had the opportunity to learn, express themselves, and simply be children.

Together with our partners, we are creating communities where every child is safe, valued, and given the chance to thrive.

Become a Hero for Literacy

Join Nal’ibali as a volunteer and help spark a lifelong love of reading in children. Together, we can build a brighter future—one story at a time.

Call for Indigenous Language Stories

Nal’ibali is calling on writers to submit new, original children’s stories in indigenous African languages!

Stories in indigenous South African languages give more children access to stories in their mother tongue.

(Stories in English and Afrikaans may also be submitted We are not offering prizes for them because we want to encourage writing in indigenous African languages during this campaign. Your contributions are always highly appreciated!)
