Inspiring a Love for Reading

Nal’ibali (isiXhosa for “here’s the story”) is South Africa’s national reading-for-enjoyment campaign, inspiring children aged 0–12 to love reading stories in all South African languages. By promoting home languages, Nal’ibali helps children build literacy skills and develop a lifelong reading culture. Adults play a key role in nurturing this love of stories and supporting children’s growth.

Our Campaigns

This is where Nal’ibali’s work on the ground comes to life, bringing the love of stories to children all over the country.

Nal'ibali is a reading-for-enjoyment campaign that sparks children's potential through storytelling and reading.
  • We already know what works: children need books, joyful reading, and supported communities.

Yet most homes still have few or no books, only a third of adults read regularly, and the system remains critically under-resourced.

NGOs are holding the line every day, but they cannot do it alone.

This is an urgent call to government, corporate South Africa, artists and creatives to step up now, invest in, and scale proven literacy work without delay.

Every day we wait, another child is left behind.

Every child deserves the freedom to read and to dream.

  • Be the example.

South Africa’s history shaped access to books and education. That truth matters. But it cannot be the reason the cycle continues.

The 2023 National Reading Barometer shows that regular book reading and access to books at home remain low.

Our children are watching.

If they do not see reading, they are less likely to choose it.
If they do not hear stories, they are less likely to imagine beyond what they see.

Start where you are. Read. Tell stories. Make time.

Nal’ibali’s family literacy programmes and SEF literacy teams are here to support you.

We cannot change the past.
But we can choose what comes next.

  • Freedom must include reading.

Today we reflect on Freedom Day, but freedom without literacy is incomplete.

The 2023 National Reading Barometer shows a country trying to read, but struggling to access what it needs.
63% of households do not own a single book and only 32% of adults read books regularly.

What does freedom mean if children grow up without books?

Across South Africa, NGOs are stepping in where the system falls short, bringing stories into homes, classrooms, and communities.

But they cannot do it alone.

If we are serious about equality, education, and opportunity, government must urgently invest in and partner with literacy organisations already doing the work.

Because literacy is not a side issue.
It is the foundation of freedom.

  • Learners took centre stage at the World Book Day celebration we hosted in Gqeberha, confidently reading, sharing ideas, and showing that reading builds confidence and voice.

At Mfesane High School, learners from different schools came together to connect with stories and each other. With support from Amazwi South African Museum of Literature and Nelson Mandela Bay Libraries, the message was clear: reading is a lifelong tool for opportunity.

A powerful highlight was Madoda Ndlakuse’s talk on how books can shape career paths, reminding learners that the stories they read today can shape their futures.
