Inspiring a Love for Reading

Nal’ibali (isiXhosa for “here’s the story”) is South Africa’s national reading-for-enjoyment campaign, inspiring children aged 0–12 to love reading stories in all South African languages. By promoting home languages, Nal’ibali helps children build literacy skills and develop a lifelong reading culture. Adults play a key role in nurturing this love of stories and supporting children’s growth.

Our Campaigns

This is where Nal’ibali’s work on the ground comes to life, bringing the love of stories to children all over the country.

  • Day 2 at Qamata Traditional Council marked another powerful step towards strengthening family literacy in the community.

Caregivers and community members shared how our training opened meaningful conversations about the role families play in children’s learning, language development, and fostering a love for reading.

Through storytelling, reading, and everyday interactions, families are gaining practical tools to support children beyond the classroom.

This is more than training; it is about building a culture of reading, connection, and lifelong learning in homes and communities.

  • Mr Zukisani Dike and his children from Upper Nqolosa JSS have officially been CAUGHT READING! 😄

From story time to giggles and page-turning adventures, this family is proving that books make every moment more fun!

It’s still Get Caught Reading Month, so grab a book, gather the family, and let us catch you reading too!
  • Dear authors,

We have received many books and stories for consideration. Please help us manage the submissions correctly by not send manuscripts directly to our team.

To donate stories to Nal’ibali, use the Call for Stories portal on our website, www.nalibali.org. This portal will only be open at specific times. We will not be able to review stories submitted outside of this programme.

Please do not send unpublished books for consideration as we do not have resources to assist you with those. Should we need books for our programmes, we will open a call on our website for books that have already been published and printed.

Thank you for supporting our mission to improve literacy through quality, relevant and inclusive reading materials.

Become a Hero for Literacy

Join Nal’ibali as a volunteer and help spark a lifelong love of reading in children. Together, we can build a brighter future—one story at a time.

Call for Indigenous Language Stories

Nal’ibali is calling on writers to submit new, original children’s stories in indigenous African languages!

Stories in indigenous South African languages give more children access to stories in their mother tongue.

(Stories in English and Afrikaans may also be submitted We are not offering prizes for them because we want to encourage writing in indigenous African languages during this campaign. Your contributions are always highly appreciated!)
