Inspiring a Love for Reading

Nal’ibali (isiXhosa for “here’s the story”) is South Africa’s national reading-for-enjoyment campaign, inspiring children aged 0–12 to love reading with stories in all South African languages. By promoting home languages, Nal’ibali helps children build literacy skills and develop a lifelong reading culture. Adults play a key role in nurturing this love of stories and supporting children’s growth.

They serve as safe havens for children to explore new ideas, engage in cultural activities, and connect with others who share similar interests. Our Nal'ibali Gauteng team braved the cold to provide three days of early literacy training to librarians in Carltonville. With the support of Joburg Libraries, our team also hosted a four-day literacy training course for librarians in Soweto. Both workshops trained librarians on how to establish and support reading clubs, share stories with children, identify appropriate reading resources for children under 12, engage in play-based learning activities, and foster a reading culture in their communities. The librarians' eagerness and readiness to execute Nal'ibali's recommendations made this session very engaging. By empowering librarians, Nal'ibali reinforces the role of libraries as centres that nurture learning, promote literacy and education, and contribute to the generation of fresh ideas and perspectives that are vital for a creative and dynamic society. Oscar Sekgobela, the project lead, gave three tips for keeping children engaged in your holiday reading programme. 1. Read-aloud sessions: Encouraging children to read stories aloud in front of their peers helps with language development and confidence, fostering a love of reading. 2. Drawing characters: Drawing characters from stories allows children to explore their world, develop observational skills, and build confidence through self-expression. 3.   • We are excited to announce that Madoda Ndlakuse has taken on a new role as our Community Development Coordinator. Madoda, an award-winning children's stories writer and storyteller, joined the Nal'ibali-VW Literacy Project as a Literacy Mentor in June 2016 and became a Project Lead in January 2022, serving until recently. In his new role, he will lead grassroots activation efforts to raise awareness and inspire community engagement in promoting male involvement in early childhood literacy. This includes managing Men’s Literacy Hubs, supporting trauma-informed literacy sessions, fostering community partnerships, training facilitators, and mobilising male reading role models. The role contributes to our national movement addressing intergenerational literacy gaps and the father wound, ensuring community-driven and sustainable impact.
