Inspiring a Love for Reading

Nal’ibali (isiXhosa for “here’s the story”) is South Africa’s national reading-for-enjoyment campaign, inspiring children aged 0–12 to love reading with stories in all South African languages. By promoting home languages, Nal’ibali helps children build literacy skills and develop a lifelong reading culture. Adults play a key role in nurturing this love of stories and supporting children’s growth.

Our Campaigns

This is where Nal’ibali’s work on the ground comes to life, bringing the love of stories to children all over the country.

  • Meet a librarian who followed the call of books

In this video, Dondo Dithebe, Library Assistant at Thembisa West Library in Thembisa, shares how his journey into librarianship began.

It all started with a simple adventure. As a learner, his teacher encouraged the class to go out and find a library nearby. That moment sparked a lifelong connection with books and reading, eventually leading him to become a librarian.

Today, he continues to inspire communities and young readers through the power of stories and access to books.

  • Why are libraries so important to South Africa’s reading ecosystem?

As we close South African Library Week, we’re reminded of the vital role libraries play in building a culture of reading.

In 2023, the National Reading Barometer South Africa highlighted six reasons why libraries remain essential spaces for reading, learning and community connection. From access to books and information to safe spaces for children to grow and learn, libraries help build a nation of readers.

Tell us: How can parents, caregivers, teachers, ECD practitioners, librarians, community organisations, NGOs, government, businesses and young people help libraries become more functional and impactful?

Share your ideas in the comments.

  • Librarians are shaping young minds every day by creating spaces where children can read, learn and dream.

This SA Library Week, let’s celebrate the champions behind the shelves.

  • Sometimes all it takes is a story to change a child’s world.

Through Gauteng SEF4 Family Literacy Facilitators, children are discovering the joy of reading in after-school reading clubs where stories spark imagination, confidence and a love of books.

The impact reaches beyond the children. Facilitators visit families in their homes, reading with children and encouraging parents and caregivers to take an active role in their learning journey. Families also receive reading supplements to continue practising at home, and caregivers are supported to register for library cards so they can borrow books from their local libraries.

Through this work, Nal’ibali SEF4 facilitators are helping children and families build a lasting culture of reading in their community.
