Inspiring a Love for Reading

Nal’ibali (isiXhosa for “here’s the story”) is South Africa’s national reading-for-enjoyment campaign, inspiring children aged 0–12 to love reading with stories in all South African languages. By promoting home languages, Nal’ibali helps children build literacy skills and develop a lifelong reading culture. Adults play a key role in nurturing this love of stories and supporting children’s growth.

Our Campaigns

This is where Nal’ibali’s work on the ground comes to life, bringing the love of stories to children all over the country.

Nal'ibali is a reading-for-enjoyment campaign that sparks children's potential through storytelling and reading.
  • Sometimes all it takes is a story to change a child’s world.

Through Gauteng SEF4 Family Literacy Facilitators, children are discovering the joy of reading in after-school reading clubs where stories spark imagination, confidence and a love of books.

The impact reaches beyond the children. Facilitators visit families in their homes, reading with children and encouraging parents and caregivers to take an active role in their learning journey. Families also receive reading supplements to continue practising at home, and caregivers are supported to register for library cards so they can borrow books from their local libraries.

Through this work, Nal’ibali SEF4 facilitators are helping children and families build a lasting culture of reading in their community.

  • Read to me.

These three simple words remind us why International Read to Me Day matters.

Across the world and here in South Africa, children thrive when stories are shared with them. Being read to builds language, sparks imagination and strengthens the bond between children and the adults who care for them.

International Read to Me Day is a reminder that reading aloud is one of the simplest and most powerful ways to support a child’s development.

Just a few minutes of reading each day can change a child’s future.
