In this edition we focus on sharing books and stories. As well as strengthening bonds, sharing stories and books with your children helps them to develop the literacy skills that are so important for success. We have tips for reading with children of every age, plus three new stories: ‘Three friends and a taxi’ (Jacana Media); ‘Foxy Joxy plays a trick’ (Book Dash) and ‘The dog walker’.
This edition celebrates International Mother Language Day! Our “mother tongue” is the language we think and feel in, the one in which it is easiest for us to express ourselves and communicate with others. We have three new stories for you and the children in your life: ‘Lyle the crocodile’ (Jacana Media); ‘How many?’ (PRAESA) and ‘A pouch of gold’.
This edition is all about World Read Aloud Day, which is celebrated by more than one million people in over 100 countries! Reading aloud on this special day is a symbol of our commitment to the power of literacy, and also a practical way of showing everyone that reading matters. We feature three new stories for you: ‘The final minute’ (Nal’ibali); ‘Mogau’s gift’ (Book Dash) and ‘The three wishes’.
Reading needs to be an adventure and, in this edition, we help you to think about what reading experiences you want your children to have over the next 12 months. We’ve created a reading passport for you to make that will encourage children to explore reading and stories! The new stories we have here for you are: ‘Six blind mice and an elephant’ (Tafelberg); ‘Fruit salad’ (PRAESA) and ‘I want to be a chef!’
It’s time for that long-awaited end-of-year break and in this edition our focus is on holidays! Our three new stories are: ‘How Dassie missed getting a tail’ (David Philip); ‘The best thing ever’ (Book Dash) and ‘Mulalo and the giant’. If you don’t get as much time as you’d like to read during the school terms, the December holiday offers a wonderful opportunity to spend time with a good book or two. Enjoy!
This edition has International Picture Book Month as its focus. This is a time to celebrate the special books that capture our imagination. Picture books, which introduce our children to the world of literature, offer us a language feast! We have three new stories for you and the children in your life: ‘Swimmy’ (Jacana Media); ‘Listen’ (PRAESA) and ‘Granny’s roast chicken’.
Stories can heal is the theme of this edition. Reading stories about the potentially tough situations or dilemmas that your children may face can help to support them in many ways. We have three new stories for you here: ‘The biscuit jar must fall’ (Book Dash); ‘How not to hide a coin’ (Heartlines) and ‘Wait until I’m fat enough!’
In this edition, we focus on exploring the world through books. We take a look at how different kinds of books – for example, biographies, traditional stories and information books – explore topics in different ways. The three new stories we have for you are: ‘The fish and chicken’s wedding’ (Book Dash); ‘Champion of the night’ (Heartlines) and ‘The leopard, the otter and the mouse’.
This edition is all about Heritage Day. We use stories to make sense of our lives and storytelling is central to our heritage as South Africans, Africans and human beings. To celebrate Heritage Day, we have three new stories for you and the children in your life: ‘Spider, the drummer’ (Nal’ibali); ‘Orange’ (PRAESA) and ‘The sky is falling down’.
In this edition, we celebrate International Literacy Day and take a look at the roles that reading and writing play in our lives. We have all you need to make a ‘Reading is out of this world!’ poster and the exciting new stories we have for you are: ‘Graça’s dream’ (Book Dash); and ‘Hanna’s friends’.
