Inspiring a Love for Reading

Nal’ibali (isiXhosa for “here’s the story”) is South Africa’s national reading-for-enjoyment campaign, inspiring children aged 0–12 to love reading with stories in all South African languages. By promoting home languages, Nal’ibali helps children build literacy skills and develop a lifelong reading culture. Adults play a key role in nurturing this love of stories and supporting children’s growth.

Our Campaigns

This is where Nal’ibali’s work on the ground comes to life, bringing the love of stories to children all over the country.

  • Happy International Literacy Day!📚📚🎉🎊

As part of our Literacy Month theme – "Empowering Young Minds, One Story at a Time!" – Nal'ibali celebrates the transformative power of storytelling in helping young readers thrive.

In a country where 81% of Grade 4 learners cannot read for meaning due to various circumstances, including their home environment, community, and access to resources, Nal'ibali aims to emphasize how stories can influence young lives and build stronger communities.
Join us in creating a supportive network of community activities that foster a love of reading and writing among children. Visit our website to find resources you can use to improve literacy among children in your community on the Nal'ibali website.

  • WATCH: The Drop Everything and Read (D.E.A.R) period is a great way to provide your pupils with reading materials in their home tongue.

In February 2024, the Nal'ibali Eastern Cape team introduced the D.E.A.R period with Grade 7 learners at Kuhle Primary School in King Williams Town, Eastern Cape, to instill a love of reading and encourage learners to write their own stories. Due to the growth of the D.E.A.R. period at the school, Grade 7 students have become D.E.A.R. ambassadors, inviting Foundation phase pupils to join their D.E.A.R. sessions.

Watch caregiver Gladys Madolo, teacher Thembani Mahlasela, and learners Lisakhanya Singaphi and Minentle Sikatshi from the school share the positive impact of the D.E.A.R. period at the school.

  • Obedience, a Grade 6 learner from Msogwaba Primary School, Msogwaba, Mpumalanga, says "Soweto Grandmother" is his favourite story. This is his favourite story because he lives with his grandmother, who is his superhero and takes care of everything for him.

Nal'ibali uses National Book Week to highlight the importance of access to literacy materials in the mother tongue and to distribute books across South Africa.

To ensure that children like Obedience have access to reading materials and help build a culture of reading for enjoyment in your community, get in touch with our Nal'ibali team on the Nal'ibali website.
