Inspiring a Love for Reading

Nal’ibali (isiXhosa for “here’s the story”) is South Africa’s national reading-for-enjoyment campaign, inspiring children aged 0–12 to love reading with stories in all South African languages. By promoting home languages, Nal’ibali helps children build literacy skills and develop a lifelong reading culture. Adults play a key role in nurturing this love of stories and supporting children’s growth.

Our Campaigns

This is where Nal’ibali’s work on the ground comes to life, bringing the love of stories to children all over the country.

Nal'ibali is a reading-for-enjoyment campaign that sparks children's potential through storytelling and reading.
  • Happy Literacy Month! This year, Nal'ibali's Literacy Month theme is "Empowering Young Minds, One Story at a Time!" in celebration of the power of storytelling to shape confident, curious, and capable young readers.

We recognise that a child's literacy journey is shaped by multiple factors, including their home environment, community, and access to resources. With this theme, we aim to highlight how stories can transform young lives and build stronger communities.

Through our Literacy Month 2025 initiatives, we aim to establish a supportive network of community activations that cultivate a love of reading and writing among children. Our events and activities will involve families, educators, and community members, encouraging them to actively participate in developing children's literacy skills.

Stay tuned to @NalibaliSA on all social media platforms to join our Literacy Month activities.

  • Reading corners create an encouraging and inviting atmosphere for sharing stories with children in your home, pre-school, or reading club.

Creating a reading corner is very easy. Use a cardboard box for a bookshelf, a blanket and pillows to sit on. Then find a free story in your language on the Nal'ibali website and enjoy it with the children in your life.

  • Nelisiwe Tshabalala, a Nal'ibali- @trevornoahfoundation Literacy Project Story Sparker happily returned to Kliptown Primary School, Eldorado Park, Gauteng, earlier this month.

Nelisiwe describes returning to the schools as feeling like coming home after having been away for months. "From the time I walked onto the school grounds, pupils asked with wide eyes, “Are you returning forever?” Their questions gave her a sense of hope and responsibility. “They had clearly been waiting for this moment as long as I had," she said.

Nelisiwe, who has been part Nal'ibali-TNF Literacy Project team since March 2025, conducts read-aloud sessions and provides reading resources while connecting storytelling to the curriculum themes for Grades R-3 at the school. She supports teachers and parents in fostering a reading culture at home and in schools and equips reading club leaders with the skills needed to expand their clubs.

What does Nelisiwe find most fulfilling about her work? Seeing children move from being listeners to becoming confident readers and storytellers.

  • Our Parent Engagement with our partners, Letsatsi Solar Park Trust, has empowered hundreds of parents from the Dealesville and Soutpan communities in the Free State province to take the lead in building a culture of reading at home.

WATCH parent Nkosinathi Nofemele and Reading Club leader Katlego Bosaletse from Dealesville share how the programme has strengthened their bond with the children in their lives and inspired them to dream bigger.
