Inspiring a Love for Reading

Nal’ibali (isiXhosa for “here’s the story”) is South Africa’s national reading-for-enjoyment campaign, inspiring children aged 0–12 to love reading with stories in all South African languages. By promoting home languages, Nal’ibali helps children build literacy skills and develop a lifelong reading culture. Adults play a key role in nurturing this love of stories and supporting children’s growth.

Our Campaigns

This is where Nal’ibali’s work on the ground comes to life, bringing the love of stories to children all over the country.

  • Freedom Primary School in Soweto, Gauteng, came alive with excitement as the Nal'ibali- @trevornoahfoundation Literacy Project hosted a fun-filled Spelling Bee Competition for 12 talented Grade 3 learners recently.

The event began with lively ice breakers that set a cheerful tone before moving into the spelling rounds that had everyone engaged and cheering.

This was more than just a competition—it was a celebration of learning, confidence, and teamwork. Every participant shone brightly, showing courage and skill that made the school proud.

A huge congratulations to all our young spellers, and a special thank you to our Story Sparkers for making this such a memorable day!
