Inspiring a Love for Reading

Nal’ibali (isiXhosa for “here’s the story”) is South Africa’s national reading-for-enjoyment campaign, inspiring children aged 0–12 to love reading with stories in all South African languages. By promoting home languages, Nal’ibali helps children build literacy skills and develop a lifelong reading culture. Adults play a key role in nurturing this love of stories and supporting children’s growth.

Our Campaigns

This is where Nal’ibali’s work on the ground comes to life, bringing the love of stories to children all over the country.

  • Meet Karabo Mayela, a Nal'ibali literacy activist and founder of the Somaphepha Reading Club from Somaphepha, Middelburg, Mpumalanga. Karabo established her reading club with only four children in Mamelodi, Gauteng, in October 2021, before becoming a Nal'ibali literacy volunteer and registering it with Nal'ibali in September 2022.

Karabo relocated to Middelburg in January 2024, but she continued with her reading club activities. She conducts reading club sessions in IsiZulu, IsiNdebele, and English every Saturday to promote a love of reading in children from her community, using resources from the Somaphepha Public Library, the Nal'ibali reading supplement, and the Nal'ibali website. Currently, the reading club comprises about 24 children aged 3 to 13 years.

Motivated by her love of words as a poet, Karabo believes that seeing the positive impact of the reading club on the children's lives encourages her to continue with her reading club activities. "Seeing children having fun and enjoying themselves while reading drives me to keep going," she said.

Karabo is an excellent example of how we can all contribute to boosting literacy in our communities. WhatsApp "courses" to 0600 44 22 54 to learn how to create your own Nal'ibali reading group and get a Nal'ibali literacy volunteer certificate.
