GROWING THE LOVE FOR STORIES & READING

WATCH: With the second school semester underway, teachers have an opportunity to foster a culture of reading in your school through the Drop Everything and Read (D.E.A.R.) period. The D.E.A.R. period is a scheduled time for learners and teachers to "drop everything and read." It is set at the same time each day or week, so pupils understand that D.E.A.R. time is important and come prepared for this special period. Watch caregiver Gladys Madolo, teacher Thembani Mahlasela, and learners Lisakhanya Singaphi and Minentle Sikatshi from Kuhle Primary School in King Williams Town, Eastern Cape, share the positive impact of the D.E.A.R. period at the school. Mandela Day may be over, but the spirit remains alive. Our Eastern Cape team recently collaborated with Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality( BCMM) Libraries, Law Enforcement, and the Fire Department to make this Mandela Day unforgettable for the children of Berlin, near East London in the Eastern Cape. In addition to the incredible stories shared by our team, parents, and children, the BCMM firefighting department gave children tips on how to prevent and deal with fires, while law enforcement taught them how to stand up to bullying. The event not only offered valuable knowledge but also fostered a sense of community among everyone involved, highlighting the positive impact of this collaborative effort.
