Inspiring a Love for Reading

Nal’ibali (isiXhosa for “here’s the story”) is South Africa’s national reading-for-enjoyment campaign, inspiring children aged 0–12 to love reading with stories in all South African languages. By promoting home languages, Nal’ibali helps children build literacy skills and develop a lifelong reading culture. Adults play a key role in nurturing this love of stories and supporting children’s growth.

Our Campaigns

This is where Nal’ibali’s work on the ground comes to life, bringing the love of stories to children all over the country.

  • This International Translation Day, Nal'ibali celebrates the power of translation to connect cultures and languages, preserve heritage, and help languages evolve! With the Nal'ibali reading supplement, various story anthologies, and over 100 written and audio stories available in 11 of South Africa's official languages on the Nal'ibali website and WhatsApp platform, Nal'ibali is dedicated to making sure all South African children can access reading materials in their mother tongue, both in digital and print formats.

Gogo shares the benefits of translation and reading in one's mother tongue. What language do you read Nal'ibali's stories in?

  • The best way to plant a seed for literacy is to provide a story-rich environment, foster early verbal communication, make reading accessible and delightful, and offer consistent, joyful read-alouds. As part of Literacy Month, our Nal'ibali North West team engaged in praise poetry, reading aloud, dancing, and storytelling with students from nine schools in the Dr Ruth Sekgomotsi Mompati District in the North West recently.

All learners who took part in the celebrations received books, medals, certificates, and trophies. This is to promote the idea of reading and move away from the competition concept that is loved so much. Instead, we aimed to foster a spirit of collaboration and creativity among the learners, encouraging them to share their love for stories and poetry. This initiative not only celebrated their achievements but also ignited a passion for reading that we hope will last a lifetime.

We have put together a list of tools to help you create an environment where children can enjoy stories on the Nal'ibali YouTube channel.
