For individuals: The programme creates jobs by employing and training local participants to work 2 days per week, promoting the importance of early literacy in their communities. Literacy Facilitators and Team Leaders are appointed to work within a 5km radius of their communities. While working in these roles they gain the necessary skills to work with children in ECD centres, schools and other child-focused programmes. In addition, they gain other skills such as planning, communication and public speaking, problem-solving, digital literacy, and leadership skills. They also gain confidence and develop professional and community networks which advance their chances of securing their next job. The programme does not offer long-term employment but offers participants an opportunity to develop skills and gain work experience.
For communities:
Literacy Facilitators work in pairs, 2 days per week to render the following services:
Each team is supervised by a Team Leader who establishes local partnerships and collaborates with local libraries in promoting reading and encourage families to sign up for library membership. Team
Leaders also work 2 days per week.
A team of Administrators offers various support functions such as Human Resources, Finance, Monitoring and Evaluation, and General Administration to ensure that all sites have the appropriate resources, ensure that the work done is reported regularly as scheduled and challenges are resolved. Some of these positions are based at the Nal’ibali office and some are province-based.
