READ ALOUD WITH NAL’IBALI – 6 MARCH 2013
Each year, we celebrate World Read Aloud Day to advocate children’s right to read and write. This World Read Aloud Day (WRAD), the Nal’ibali reading-for-enjoyment campaign is calling on everyone in South Africa to read aloud the same story on the same day so we can experience the joy and benefits of sharing stories with children together – and be inspired to carry on reading aloud with our children each and every day of the year.
Help us achieve a South African first!
In support of the initiative to get the largest number of people reading aloud at the same time, award-winning children’s author and illustrator Niki Daly has written and illustrated a special story for Nal’ibali – ‘A gold star and a kiss for Thoko’ – to share on World Read Aloud Day. And as part of Nal’ibali’s goal to connect people to reading material in a range of SA languages, the story will be available in 6 South African languages to ensure even more people are able to share and enjoy the story in a language that is meaningful to them. Says Daly: “Food is needed to keep our bodies healthy and alive. Books and stories are needed to keep our minds sharp and imaginative. No child should be without food or stories.”
